Cutaneous: Outermost protective boundary. Its located on the outside of the body, and is known as the skin. It is composed of keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. It's underlying dermis is mostly dense connective tissue. It is exposed to air= dry membrane. It is considered an epithelial membrane.
Mucous: Lines all body cavities that open to the exterior body surface. It is often adapted for secreation and absorbtion. Located in stratified squamous epithelium (mouth esophogus) and simple columnar epithelial (rest of digestive tract). It rests on loose connective tissue called Lamina propria. It lines hollow organs of : resp., dig., urinary, and repro. tracts. It has moist membranes. Many, but not all (urinary), secrete mucous.
Serous: Lines open body cavities that are closed to the exterior body surface. composed of simple squamous epithelium resting on thin layer of areolar connective tissue. Occur in pairs. Parietal layer lines specific portion of wall of ventral cavity. Visceral layers covers outside of organs in that cavity. Serous layers seperated by a thin layer of serous fluid which is secreted by both membranes. Serous fluid allows organs to slide easily wihtout friction (heart, stomach, etc.). Serosa lining abdominal cavity is peritoneum. In the thorax, serous membranes isolate lungs and heart from eachother. Around the lungs is the pleura; the heart, pericardium.
Synovial: Secrets a lubricating fluid. It lines fiborous capsules surrounding joints. composed of soft areolar connective tissue and contain no epithelial cells. Provides a smooth surface and secrete a lubricating fluid. It also line small sacs of connective tissue called bursae. It cushions organs during muscle activity.
